Just as I was working with a student on accepting her work as it is right now, on allowing herself to develop at her own pace without harshly judging or belittling her work, especially in exercise form, I received this quote in an email from an old acquaintance.
"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others" —Martha Graham

I read this to her out loud. Another case of perfect synchronicity.

Beautiful painting Suzanne! It's so similart to an abstract, yet with further observation... I can see a lake in the middle of the forest. =D

Exactly, Hazel! You're in the groove... and, thank you.

Or in the grove-which was my first thought-a nice, shady, restful spot in the forest.

Suzanne McDermott said...

Yes again. Not a lake, really, but a pool of water. Creek? Still, my first
Thought was to name it
Shady Grove, no... There's water. Shady Pool?
Not so poetic. Finally, Respite sort of said it all.

Lovely painting!
Thanks for sharing that Martha Graham quote. I was able to encourage another budding artist with it later that day. The synchronicity continues...

Thank you, Mineke! So happy to hear from you.
Glad the Graham quote was helpful... and that you like this painting. XO

Respite is a perfect name for this lovely painting. I will be passing on the Martha Graham quote to others, and keeping it for myself too, thank you!
